Are there any laws governing the dissolution of a civil union?

In Washington state, laws governing the dissolution of a civil union are largely the same as those associated with the dissolution of a marriage. In either case, the dissolution of a civil union must be done with the assistance of the court and involves filing a petition for dissolution of the civil union. The petition for dissolution must be accepted and filed by a court prior to the dissolution being finalized. The court may also address issues related to spousal support, division of property, and determine responsibility for debts associated with the civil union. In most cases, the court will require both parties to attend at least one court hearing and provide any documentation needed to support their claims. It should also be noted that in Washington state, even if a civil union has been dissolved, the parties may still have certain responsibilities to one another, such as parenting responsibilities and/or debtors obligations. These obligations are to be determined by a court and enforced through the appropriate court. Finally, it should be noted that the dissolution of a civil union does not eliminate any inheritance rights that the parties may have had prior to the dissolution. Such rights are to be determined by a court of probate and are separate from the dissolution of the civil union.
