Yes, there are civil union laws in the United States. A civil union is a legally recognized form of relationship between two adults, similar to a marriage, but without the same rights and benefits of marriage. North Dakota is one of the states in the US that recognizes civil unions. In North Dakota, civil unions were recognized in 2013 with the passage of the Civil Union Act. This law provides protection under state law to couples in North Dakota who enter into a civil union. This partnership is treated much the same as a marriage when it comes to matters such as inheritance, adoption, medical decision-making, and financial protection. Though civil unions in North Dakota offer many of the same protections as marriage, the state does not recognize civil unions in the same way it would a marriage.
