What are the remedies for civil actions?

In North Carolina, civil actions are legal disputes between two or more people or organizations. When someone believes they have been wronged by another party, they can seek remedies for the wrongdoing through the court system. In civil cases, the remedies are generally monetary damages, such as awarding the harmed party money for the harm caused. At the end of a civil case, the court may order the party who is found liable to pay money to the harmed party. This financial remedy is intended to make the harmed party "whole" again. The court may also issue an injunction, which is a court order requiring the party found liable to stop the activity that caused injury. For example, if a person caused injury by violating a lease agreement, the court may issue an injunction ordering the person to stop violating the lease agreement and to pay a specified amount of money. In some circumstances, the court may also issue a declaratory judgment. This is a court order that provides a legal ruling on an issue or dispute without either side winning. It simply declares the rights of the parties involved in the case. The court may also award costs and attorney’s fees to either or both parties. Costs include reasonable expenses related to bringing a case to court, such as filing and service fees. Attorney’s fees are the costs of hiring an attorney to handle a case. These remedies are meant to provide a just resolution to the parties involved in a civil action. Depending on the case, other remedies may be available as well.
