What is class action litigation?

Class action litigation is a type of legal procedure that allows a group of people, or a “class”, to join together and take legal action against a single defendant in a court of law. This type of lawsuit is common in Idaho when a large number of people have the same complaint against a single person or company. In a class action lawsuit, the plaintiffs, or group members, join together to take legal action as a single entity. This saves them time and money because each individual does not need to file their own separate lawsuit. The court typically appoints a lead plaintiff or a representative for the class to represent the entire group during the proceedings. The defendant in a class action lawsuit typically has to defend against the claims of all members of the class at the same time. If the class wins the lawsuit, then the court generally orders the defendant to provide some form of compensation to all members of the class. Class action litigation is designed to make it easier for individuals to pursue justice and protect their rights when multiple people have the same complaint against a single person or company. By joining together, the members of the class can make sure that their case is heard and that justice is served.
