What are civil rights?
Civil rights are fundamental rights and freedoms that are guaranteed to all people in a state, country, or other jurisdiction. In the United States, civil rights are protected by both the U.S. Constitution and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In Florida, civil rights are further protected by the Florida Civil Rights Act of 1992 (FCRA). The FCRA defines civil rights as “all personal rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and any incident thereto, including the right to be free from discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, handicap, or marital status”. This includes the right to participate in elections, voting, being able to attend public schools, serve on juries, and access to public places and services. Additionally, the FCRA provides Floridians with protection against discrimination in the workplace, housing, and the provision of public services. This includes the right to be free from harassment, pay disparities, unfair assessment practices, and other unfair and discriminatory practices. Civil rights are essential for ensuring that all citizens are treated fairly, regardless of their race, gender, nationality, or any other characteristic. This is why it is important to understand what civil rights are and how they are protected in Florida so that all citizens can be aware of and benefit from their rights.
