What is the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice?

The Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice is the nation’s primary watchdog against discrimination. The division is responsible for enforcing federal statutes that protect people from discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, disability, religion, and national origin. This includes protecting people’s right to vote, including provisions of the Voting Rights Act, as well as protecting educational institutions from discrimination. The Civil Rights Division also works with state and local governments to ensure that they are in compliance with federal civil rights laws and to help create policies and procedures that promote justice and equal protection under the law. In North Carolina, this includes working with local law enforcement and school administrators to ensure that civil rights laws are followed. The Civil Rights Division works to combat discrimination in all its forms, from hate crimes to the unequal access to housing or employment. It also works to ensure that people in North Carolina have access to and can exercise their basic rights, such as the right to vote. In addition, the Civil Rights Division investigates complaints of discrimination and if necessary, takes legal action to ensure that people’s rights are protected.
