What remedies are available for a civil rights violation?

When a person’s civil rights have been violated in Florida, they have the legal right to seek remedies in order to make up for the harm done. Depending on the severity of the violation, some remedies may involve seeking monetary compensation or other forms of compensation (such as an apology, or being provided with certain services). In addition to seeking monetary compensation, a person can also seek an injunction, which is an order from the court to stop someone from continuing to violate their civil rights. An injunction could be to prevent someone from discriminating against a particular group or person. In some cases, a court might award damages for “mental anguish and humiliation” if the civil rights violation has had a particularly impactful or significant emotional effect on the victim. If a person’s civil rights have been violated, they may also be able to seek punitive damages from the wrongdoer. This is a way to punish the wrongdoer and make an example of them so that similar violations do not occur in the future. Finally, in addition to providing remedies, civil rights law seeks to prevent future violations from happening. This can be accomplished by passing laws that protect people’s civil rights or creating internal policies within an organization that address civil rights violations.
