What is the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act?

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act is a federal law that was passed in 1975 to protect consumers from deceptive and unfair warranty practices by product manufacturers and sellers. The law applies to any product that costs more than $15 and has a stated written warranty. It also applies to service contracts, which are agreements for service or repair of a product. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act requires manufacturers and sellers to clearly identify which warranties are implied (implied warranties are automatically assumed by law, unless clearly disclaimed) and which are express. It also requires that they clearly state the terms of the warranty, such as the duration of the warranty and what is covered. In addition, it requires that warranty terms be easily understandable and not deceptive. In South Carolina, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act applies to any product purchased in the state. It is important for consumers to understand their rights under the law and the warranties they are entitled to so they can make informed purchasing decisions. Consumers also have the right to seek legal action in the event that the product manufacturer or seller does not honor their warranty obligations.
