What is the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)?
The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, commonly known as GDPR, is a set of data protection regulations enacted by the European Union. The GDPR provides individuals with a set of rights, including the right to know what personal data is collected and how it is used, the right to access and rectify their data, and the right to data portability. It also obliges organizations to adhere to organizational, technical, and legal measures to protect personal data, such as ensuring that data is collected only for specified purposes and is deleted when no longer necessary. GDPR also puts in place restrictions regarding the transfer of data outside of the EU. Organizations based outside of the EU must abide by GDPR when they collect and process data of EU citizens. In Arizona, organizations must comply with GDPR if they offer goods or services to citizens of the European Union or monitor their behavior, such as through the use of cookies or other tracking technologies. GDPR is enforceable by law and businesses that fail to comply can face large fines, so it is important that Arizona organizations understand what GDPR entails and be able to demonstrate that they are adhering to its regulations.
