What is the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)?
The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) is a law in Canada that governs the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information. It applies to private sector businesses in the provinces and territories (except Alberta, British Columbia, and Quebec) as well as federally-regulated organizations and businesses. In Arizona, PIPEDA is enforced by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. PIPEDA was created to protect individuals’ privacy rights by requiring organizations to manage the personal information of customers and employees appropriately. This law seeks to ensure that organizations are transparent about how personal information is collected, used, and disclosed, and that individuals have the right to be notified and consent to its use and disclosure. PIPEDA also requires organizations to keep personal information accurate and secure, as well as destroy or delete it securely once its purpose is fulfilled. Organizations must also give individuals the right to access any personal information that organizations have collected about them, as well as the right to correct inaccurate information. This law is important for the protection of individuals’ personal information in Arizona. By setting out the appropriate standards for collecting, using, and disclosing personal information, PIPEDA helps organizations and individuals alike ensure that their data remains secure.
