The California Online Privacy Protection Act (CalOPPA) is a law that requires websites and online services that collect personally identifiable information (PII) from California residents to post and maintain a comprehensive privacy policy. CalOPPA applies to any website or online service that collects PII from California residents, regardless of where the website or online service is located. CalOPPA requires website operators to post a clear and conspicuous privacy policy on their website stating what PII is being collected and how it is being used. It also contains provisions that require operators to notify California citizens of their rights to ask the operator to delete their personal information, and give them the opportunity to opt-out of the sale of their PII. CalOPPA does not apply to websites and online services located in Florida. Instead, websites and online services located in Florida must comply with the Florida Information Protection Act. The Florida Information Protection Act requires organizations to provide notice to consumers of their rights to privacy and security of their PII, and to take reasonable security measures to protect PII collected from Florida residents.
