What is encryption and how does it protect data?

Encryption is a process of scrambling data so that it appears as unrecognizable code. This code is referred to as ciphertext and can only be interpreted with the use of a special algorithm and a key. When data is sent over networks, it is vulnerable to interception by hackers. With encryption, however, this data is protected by being converted into the unrecognizable ciphertext. In Florida, data security laws require that companies encrypt data when it is sent and stored electronically. This makes it much more difficult for hackers to gain access to the data and understand what it contains. One type of encryption is called “symmetric encryption”, which uses a shared key to both encrypt and decrypt data. Another type is “asymmetric encryption” which uses two different keys for encryption and decryption. Data encryption is an important step for companies to take when protecting their sensitive information as it ensures that data remains secure and private. It is especially important in today’s world as more and more companies are relying on digital networks to store and share data. By encrypting data, companies can protect their information from potential breaches and data loss.
