What is the California Shine the Light law?

The California Shine the Light law is a consumer privacy legislation that was passed in the state of California in 2018. The law gives consumers the right to know what types of personal information businesses have collected about them, with whom that information has been shared, and whether that information has been sold. The law also requires businesses to provide consumers with a copy of their information upon request. In addition to granting consumers the right to access their own data, the California Shine the Light law also allows consumers to opt out of having their data shared with third parties. The law is intended to protect consumer privacy and financial data, as well as to give consumers more control over how their data is handled and shared. While the law only applies to California businesses, other states, including Oregon, have passed similar legislation to protect their consumers. Oregon’s Consumer Data Privacy Act, which went into effect in 2020, provides similar protections for Oregon consumers.
