What is data classification?

Data classification is the process of organizing data into categories according to its security. It helps ensure that the data is being used and stored appropriately. Hawaii has a data security law that requires organizations to classify data in terms of its sensitivity. There are three categories of data classification; Public, Private, and Confidential. Public data can be shared freely without any restrictions. It is not sensitive and can be accessed by anyone. This includes public documents, statistical information, and general information. Private data is intended for internal use only. Only authorized personnel have access to this information and it should not be shared with external parties. This includes employee data, financial information, and customer data. Confidential data is highly sensitive and access must be restricted to only authorized personnel. It requires special security measures to protect it from unauthorized access. This includes intellectual property, legal documents, confidential customer data, and sensitive financial records. Data classification is an important security measure used to protect the information of an organization. It helps organizations comply with data security laws and ensure only authorized personnel have access to the data they need.
