What is the EU-US Privacy Shield?

The EU-US Privacy Shield is a data transfer agreement between the European Union and United States that recognizes the importance of protecting personal data. The Privacy Shield sets a high standard for how companies should protect the personal data of European citizens when it is transferred to, stored, and processed in the U.S. The agreement lays out the legal framework for companies to ensure the protection of personal data and establishes a process for citizens to be able to resolve complaints. The Privacy Shield also includes an annual review process to ensure the standards are being met. Since its establishment in 2016, over 5,000 organizations have adopted the Privacy Shield in compliance with European data security law. Companies that sign onto the agreement must inform the Department of Commerce of any changes they make to their data protection practices and notify the consumers of their data protection practices. The EU-US Privacy Shield is designed to help companies protect personal data while in accordance with the European data security laws.
