Are there any other legal consequences of a DUI conviction besides jail time and license suspension?

In Vermont, the consequences of a DUI conviction go far beyond jail time and license suspension. In addition to being fined and paying court costs, the convicted party can also expect to have an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) installed in their vehicle. This device requires the driver to blow into a breathalyzer before the car will start, and will prevent the car from starting if the driver has any alcohol on their breath. The convicted party will also be required to enroll in a DUI program which usually requires classes, community service, and/or treatment programs. The convicted party will also be ordered to abstain from drinking and driving for a certain period of time. This can involve monitoring devices that measure the level of alcohol in the driver’s system, as well as alcohol screening. Those found to be in violation of this order can be jailed for up to one year and/or fined up to $1,000. The court can also order a suspension of the individual’s registration, or impound the vehicle driven at the time of the incident. The court can also order restitution to be paid to the victim for damage caused in the accident. Finally, the convicted individual will find it extremely difficult to obtain a job or a loan once the conviction is on their record. This is because employers and lenders are often wary of dealing with individuals with a criminal record.
