What is an ignition interlock device and how does it work?

An ignition interlock device, or IID, is a breathalyzer that is installed in a vehicle and wired to the ignition. When the driver attempts to start the vehicle, the IID requires the driver to blow into the device. If the breath-alcohol concentration is above the pre-set limit, the IID will prevent the vehicle from starting. If the breath-alcohol concentration is lower than the pre-set limit, the vehicle will start and the IID will remain inactive while the vehicle is in use. The IID is used to aid in enforcing the legal requirements of Tennessee’s drunk driving accident law. This law requires those convicted of a DUI to complete an Alcohol Safety Action Program prior to being eligible to receive their license back. Additionally, vehicle owners whose license has been suspended due to a DUI may be required to install an IID in the vehicle as a condition of license reinstatement. Furthermore, those required to install an IID must pay for and maintain the device. This includes submitting to random breath tests while the vehicle is running. If the breath-alcohol concentration is above the pre-set limit, the IID will record the violation and prevent the vehicle from continuing to operate until the pre-set limit is met. An IID is an important tool in keeping Tennessee’s roads safe by helping to prevent drinking and driving. It allows those required to install it to remain within the boundaries of the law while still being able to drive.
