Can a debt collector contact me outside of normal business hours?
In Washington, debt collectors are legally allowed to contact you between 8am and 9pm. However, this does not mean that debt collectors are not allowed to contact you outside of normal business hours. Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which regulates how debt collectors can contact you, they are allowed to contact you at other times if you give them permission to do so. It is important to remember that, even if you do not give debt collectors permission to contact you outside of these normal business hours, they are still allowed to call and leave messages. This means that they could potentially call you during the night or early morning if they feel the need. If you do not want to be contacted at certain hours, then you should clearly inform the debt collector of this. Debt collectors are typically not allowed to harass you or contact you excessively; if a debt collector is doing this, then you may have legal rights to pursue a claim against them. This includes calling you outside of normal business hours, or contacting you in a way that causes you distress or fear. You may be entitled to compensation if this happens.
