Can a debt collector ever contact me more than once a week?

Yes, a debt collector can contact you more than once a week in Oregon; however, there are laws in place that limit how often and what types of contacts are allowed. Under Oregon debt collection law, a debt collector can contact you once a week about a debt, but the contact must be limited to the debt and must not be done in an abusive or harassing manner. The debt collector must also provide you with written notice prior to, or at the time of the contact, to inform you of the debt and your right to dispute it. The collector may not contact you more than twice in a seven-day period to discuss the debt, even if you have not disputed it. Additionally, the collector may not contact you at inconvenient times, such as before 8 am or after 9 pm, without your prior consent. As always, you have the right to ask a debt collector to stop contacting you altogether, or to contact you only in writing. If a debt collector violates any of the above regulations, you may be able to file a complaint with the Oregon Department of Justice or take other legal action.
