When is a debt collector allowed to contact me in person?

In Tennessee, debt collectors are only allowed to contact a debtor in person if the collector has written permission from the debtor to do so. This permission must be obtained in advance and in writing. In addition, a debt collector must provide the debtor with a minimum of two business days notice before contacting the debtor in person. The notice must include the date, time, and place of the meeting, as well as providing the debtor with information about how to dispute the debt related to the contact request. The debt collector must also provide written confirmation of the in-person contact within four days of the meeting. If a debt collector contacts a debtor in person without obtaining the appropriate written permission and providing proper notice, this could be considered a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. If a debtor believes that a debt collector has violated the FDCPA, the debtor has the right to file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
