What is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal law designed to protect people with disabilities from discrimination. It was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush in 1990 and is enforced by the U.S. Department of Justice. The ADA prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in areas such as employment, education, housing, and public accomodations. The ADA applies to employers, state and local government, educational institutions, and transportation. It requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities and to make sure that all job applicants and employees are treated fairly in the workplace. It also requires educational institutions to provide reasonable accomodations to students with disabilities and ensure that they have equal access to educational programs and activities. In Utah, the state has adopted the ADA and does not require employers to provide additional protections beyond the federal law. However, the Utah Antidiscrimination Act (UADA) provides similar protections and additional ones that may apply in certain situations. Additionally, the Utah state government is required under the Americans with Disabilities Act to ensure that all services and programs are readily accessible to people with disabilities.
