What is a reasonable accommodation?
A reasonable accommodation is a change in the workplace or other environment that allows a person with a disability to have an equal opportunity to take advantage of the same opportunities available to others. In Idaho, reasonable accommodations are required by law for individuals with disabilities to be able to participate in activities or services, or to receive equal opportunity in employment. Examples of reasonable accommodations may include extended deadlines for submitting paperwork, providing accessible transportation, providing assistive technology, or allowing a service animal to be in a public place. Employers may also provide reasonable accommodation by making physical changes to the workplace, such as adding ramps or making adjustments to employees’ desks and chairs to accommodate wheelchair use. They may also provide additional time off during a workday to accommodate a person’s disability. If a person with a disability needs reasonable accommodation in order to participate in activities or receive equal opportunity in employment, they must inform the employer or organization of their need and explain how the accommodation will help them participate or work. The employer or organization then decides if and how to provide the reasonable accommodation. Reasonable accommodations are an important part of disability law in Idaho and are meant to make sure everyone has access to the same opportunities.
