What is a reasonable accommodation?

A reasonable accommodation is a change in a process, policy, or environment that allows a qualified individual with a disability to participate in a program, activity, or job without having to meet all of the regular requirements. This includes changes in the way a program is delivered, modifying equipment, or providing auxiliary aids or services. In Virginia, the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Fair Housing Act both provide individuals with disabilities protection from discrimination in the form of reasonable accommodations. Examples of reasonable accommodations may include, but are not limited to, making a special space for a person who uses a wheelchair or providing an interpreter for a person who is deaf. The Virginia Department of Education can provide guidance and assistance to ensure that reasonable accommodations are in place for students with disabilities. In addition, employers must provide reasonable accommodations to employees with disabilities, unless doing so would impose an undue hardship on the employer.
