What is an accommodation request?

An accommodation request is a document that a person with disabilities can submit to ask for adjustments to their working, educational, or living environment on the basis of their disability. In Maryland, disability law guarantees reasonable accommodations to persons with disabilities. Accommodations can range from providing a wheelchair ramp to allowing extra time to complete an exam. The request is made to an employer, educational institution, or other entity which has authority over the environment in question. It is often made in the form of a letter or online form, outlining the type of accommodation being requested and why it is necessary. The entity receiving the request must consider it in good faith and provide a reasonable response. In addition to the request itself, a person making an accommodation request may need to provide medical or other documentation of their disability. This documentation will be used to demonstrate how the requested accommodation would help the person with their disability. It is important to understand that accommodation requests are only granted if they are considered reasonable. If it would be an undue burden for the entity to accommodate the request, then it will not be approved. It is also important to remember that accommodations are only provided if they are necessary due to the disability, and not because of any other reason.
