What is an accommodation request?

An accommodation request is a request made to an employer, educational institution, or other organization, asking that they provide a disabled individual with accommodations to ensure they can fully participate in employment or educational activities. In Virginia, disability law requires that employers and educational institutions accommodate individuals with disabilities unless they can demonstrate that doing so will be too burdensome. An accommodation request is typically made by a person with a disability, or an advocate on their behalf, and describes what accommodations would allow them to participate fully in their activities. For example, an accommodation request for an educational institution might include providing a student with accessible textbooks or seating assignments that make it easier for them to see the instructor. Employers may receive requests for anything from providing a quiet workspace to granting extra time for completing tasks. Accommodation requests must be considered on an individual basis, taking into account the particular needs of the individual making the request.
