What is the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008?

The Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA) is a set of federal regulations that protect people from discrimination in the workplace and in other areas of life based on disability. This act amended the earlier Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), adding various new protections and clarifying language of the existing bill. The ADAAA ensures that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as any other person. This includes things like the right to be free of discrimination in the workplace; the right to receive equal access to public places, services, and accommodations; and the right to reasonable modifications so they can fully participate in the activities they want or need to. In Alaska, the state Department of Law enforces the ADAAA. This is done through state and federal anti-discrimination laws. It also works closely with the Alaska Human Rights Commission, which is the Alaska state office that provides information and education on the ADAAA and other disability rights laws. The ADAAA has greatly improved the rights of people with disabilities in both the workplace and in society as a whole. It protects them from discrimination and ensures they have equal access to the same opportunities as everyone else.
