What are the different types of divorce?

In Maryland, there are several different types of divorce that can be sought. The most common type is a traditional divorce, which is a court-ordered dissolution of the marriage. This type of divorce can be either a Mutual Consent Divorce or a Contested Divorce. A Mutual Consent Divorce is an agreement between the two parties where both agree to voluntarily end the marriage. This type of divorce is much quicker and easier than a Contested Divorce, as it does not involve the courts and is often uncontested. A Contested Divorce, on the other hand, is a divorce that requires the involvement of the courts. The courts will hear the case and make a determination on the dissolution of the marriage. This type of divorce is more complicated and will take longer to be decided, as the court will need to hear both parties’ evidence and arguments. Another type of divorce in Maryland is an Annulment. This type of divorce is only applied in certain cases where the marriage is invalid or was not valid in the first place. Annulments are generally based on circumstances that contradict Maryland state law, such as the marriage involving a minor, or a marriage where one of the spouses was not present. Finally, in Maryland there is a type of divorce known as Legal Separation. This type of divorce allows the couple to remain legally married, while living separate and apart. This type of divorce will affect certain aspects of the couple’s lives, such as property division and alimony, but will not dissolve the marriage.
