What is a child custody evaluation?

A child custody evaluation is an important part of the divorce process in Arizona. This evaluation is conducted by a qualified professional, such as an Arizona court-appointed psychologist, to help the court decide what type of child custody arrangement is in the best interests of the children involved in the divorce. The psychologist, or in some cases a social worker, will examine the parents’ relationship with their children, the children’s needs, and the parents’ ability to meet those needs. The psychologist will also consider any other relevant factors such as the parents’ mental and emotional health, drug or alcohol use, their ability to provide a safe and healthy environment, and any other potential risks to the children’s well-being. The evaluation will then be used by the court to make a ruling about which type of custody arrangement is in the best interests of the children. This type of evaluation is particularly important in cases where there may be allegations of child abuse or where the parents may disagree on which type of custody arrangement is in the children’s best interests.
