How do I change my name after a divorce?

In Florida, after a divorce, you can change your name by filing a Petition for Change of Name with the circuit court in the county where you live. The Petition must include information such as your name, date of birth, and the new name you wish to adopt. You must also provide the court with a copy of your divorce judgment. Once you have filed your Petition, you must publish notice of your intended name change in a local newspaper for at least three weeks. The notice must include the case number from your petition, your current name, your new name, and the date and court name where you filed your petition. You must also send a copy of your notice to all interested parties, usually including your ex-spouse. You can accomplish this by sending notice by certified mail with a return receipt. Finally, you must show proof that you have complied with the above steps and attend a court hearing. Generally, the court will consider the Petition and grant the name change. Once the court approves the name change, you can obtain legal documents such as a driver’s license and passport with your new name.
