Are there any laws regarding dangerous dogs in my state?
Yes, there are laws regarding dangerous dogs in New York. Under the Dog Control Law, a dangerous dog is defined as any dog that has been found to have bitten a person and caused physical injury, or any dog that has previously been found to have shown a tendency to attack people. In New York, if someone is injured by a dog bite, the injured parties must prove that the owner was aware that the animal was potentially dangerous and did nothing to stop it from attacking. Owners are also liable for any damages resulting from the attack, such as medical expenses, lost income due to an inability to work, pain and suffering, and even punitive damages. In addition to being liable for damages, dog owners may also face criminal charges in cases of serious injury. Dog owners can face up to a year in prison and/or a fine of up to $1,000. If the injury caused by the dog is serious, the dog may be deemed dangerous, and the owner may be required to take additional safety precautions to protect the public. In addition, the owner of a dangerous dog must post a sign warning people of the animal’s presence on or near the owner’s property. The sign must be clearly visible and include the words “Beware of Dog”. Additionally, the owner will be required to keep the animal securely confined in a building or enclosure, and the dog must be muzzled in all public areas. Failure to comply with these laws could result in fines of up to $50 and/or up to 15 days in jail.
