What is the definition of domestic violence?

Domestic violence, which is also known as intimate partner violence (IPV), is defined as behavior in a domestic partnership, family, or household that is used to control another person through fear, coercion, physical and/or sexual abuse. It can take many forms, including verbal, emotional, physical, psychological, and sexual abuse. It can occur between former or current intimate partners, spouses, family members, or roommates. In New Mexico, domestic violence is defined as “any act of domestic abuse, including physical, sexual, psychological, economic, or verbal abuse between family or household members, or between a household member and a person with whom the household member is or has been acting in a relationship, including an ex-spouse, former or current partner, or the other parent of a child.” Domestic violence can have a major and lasting impact on the victim’s physical, mental, and emotional health as well as their relationships. It is important for individuals to recognize the signs of domestic violence in order to seek help and respond appropriately.
