What are the types of domestic abuse?
In Louisiana, the types of domestic abuse that are recognized by law are physical, emotional, financial, and sexual. Physical abuse is any behavior that causes physical harm to a person, including pushing, slapping, hitting, or restraining. Emotional abuse is any behavior that causes psychological or emotional harm, such as verbal put-downs, manipulation, and threats. Financial abuse is any behavior that takes control of a person’s finances or money without their consent, such as stealing from them or taking away their access to resources. Finally, sexual abuse is any form of non-consensual sexual contact, such as unwanted touching or pressure to engage in sexual activities or behavior. In Louisiana, domestic abuse is taken very seriously and is strictly enforced. If a person is found to be guilty of domestic abuse, they can be arrested and charged with a crime and face jail time, fines, and other serious consequences. The courts also have the authority to issue a domestic violence protection order, also known as a restraining order, to protect victims of domestic abuse. If a restraining order is issued, it may prevent the abuser from having any contact with the victim or entering any property owned by the victim.
