What is the role of child protective services in cases of domestic abuse?

In the state of New York, child protective services have an integral role in cases of domestic abuse. Depending on the severity and frequency of abuse, the State Central Register (SCR) may be contacted. This will allow the SCR to investigate the allegations and create an assessment even if no formal charges are pressed. The investigation by the SCR may lead to the initiation of a child abuse and neglect case, filed with the family court which can provide a variety of services that include parent education, housing, and counseling. The outcome of the investigation may also lead to the removal of children from the home if there is deemed a risk of harm to the children. In addition to the SCR, Child Protective Services (CPS) will also become involved in cases of domestic abuse. CPS, part of the Department of Social Services, will assess the safety of the home and ensure that the children are not in any danger. Depending on the severity of the violence or danger, CPS can take steps to remove the children from the home to a safer environment. In addition to the protective services, New York has a variety of Domestic Violence Courts which can provide protection for victims of domestic abuse. These courts are staffed with professionals and trained staff who can work with the victim and their family to get them the help they need. Domestic Violence Courts provide protection for victims and are an important resource for victims to help them live a life free of abuse.
