What is the penalty for a drug-related felony?

In Minnesota, the penalty for a drug-related felony depends on the type of drug and the amount of the drug. Generally speaking, drug-related felonies are punished with a prison sentence or a fine. For example, if an individual is found to be in possession of a large amount of a controlled substance, such as methamphetamine or cocaine, they could face up to 4 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $100,000. Furthermore, individuals convicted of a drug-related felony could also face loss of professional licenses, such as a medical license or a teaching license, or the revocation of their driver’s license. An individual could also be placed on supervised probation as part of the penalty for a drug-related felony. For drug-related felonies involving a minor, the penalty is a minimum of one year in prison and/or a fine of up to $100,000. Additionally, the court can order mandatory drug testing and/or treatment as part of the penalty for a drug-related felony. In some cases, an individual can be required to attend a drug rehabilitation program if they are convicted of a drug-related felony as part of their penalty. Finally, if an individual is convicted of a drug-related felony, their case may also be reported to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). This could potentially prevent the individual from owning a firearm in the future.
