What is a drug court?

A drug court is a specialized court created to help individuals with drug or alcohol addiction by providing judicial supervision and resources to help people make lasting lifestyle changes. In Oklahoma, some drug courts focus on helping people with chemical dependency by coordinating counseling, substance abuse treatment, and other social services. The goal of drug courts is to reduce repeat drug-related offenses and ensure that people remain substance-free. Drug courts also work to eliminate lengthy jail sentences for non-violent drug offenders. Instead, they focus on treatment and rehabilitation while also requiring participants to complete their sentences. Drug court participants are required to appear before the court regularly and may be asked to provide evidence of their progress in areas such as drug testing, counseling, and employment. They may also be required to pay fines or appear in court frequently. In Oklahoma, drug courts are run by a team of professionals including prosecuting attorneys, defense attorneys, substance abuse and mental health specialists, law enforcement officials, probation and parole officers, and other court personnel. The team works together to review the progress of drug court participants and make sure they are meeting all the court’s requirements. Drug courts in Oklahoma also coordinate with local treatment providers to ensure participants are getting the best possible treatment, support, and guidance.
