What are the different classifications of drugs?

In Texas, drugs are classified in five categories, or “schedules.” The schedules are numbered I through V, with I being the most serious and V the least serious. Schedule II drugs include drugs like oxycodone and fentanyl that have some medical uses, but still have a high potential for abuse and addiction. Schedule IV drugs include drugs like Xanax and Valium that have accepted medical uses and a low potential for abuse. Finally, Schedule V drugs include drugs like cough medicines containing codeine and have accepted medical uses but are the least likely to cause abuse and dependency. The classifications of drugs are important because they determine the severity of the crime if someone is found with or distributing them. Crimes related to Schedule I drugs are more severely punished because they are deemed to have the highest potential for addiction and abuse.
