What is Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)?

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a program offered through the Social Security Administration (SSA) that provides financial assistance to people with disabilities who are unable to work due to their disability. SSDI is funded by taxes taken out of workers’ paychecks, and is available to citizens and qualified non-citizens who have worked long enough and recently enough to have earned enough Social Security credits. In Maryland, applicants for SSDI must meet certain qualifications, including having a disabling physical or mental condition that has lasted, or is expected to last, at least one year or result in death. Applicants must also have worked recently enough for the Social Security Administration to consider them “insured” under the Social Security program. In addition, in order to qualify for SSDI in Maryland, the applicant must have earned a certain number of credits through work covered by Social Security taxes. Once approved for SSDI, individuals in Maryland will receive monthly payments to help cover living expenses, such as food, rent and utilities. In addition, SSDI recipients may also receive Medicaid and Medicare coverage. Maryland provides additional assistance for individuals with disabilities through waiver programs, which provide an extra level of financial and medical support. With the help of these programs, Maryland citizens with disabilities can stay in their homes and receive needed medical and support services.
