What is Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)?
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a federal program that is administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA). It provides monthly benefits to individuals with a disability who are unable to work due to the disability, or those who have become disabled while working. In Texas, SSDI benefits are available to those who are deemed disabled by the SSA and are under the age of 65. To be eligible, individuals must have accumulated enough work credits and must have a disabling medical condition that is expected to last a minimum of 12 months or result in death. Once approved for SSDI, benefits begin after a five-month waiting period. These benefits are paid to the disabled individual each month for as long as the disability persists or until the individual reaches qualifying age for retirement. In addition, SSDI also provides medical benefits through Medicare, a separate program from Social Security. SSDI is important for those with disabilities because it provides a steady income to those who are unable to work due to their disability. This helps them financially while they are unable to work and can help them to live a more independent life. SSDI is also an important component in disability planning law in Texas, as it allows individuals with disabilities to receive medical and financial assistance.
