Who is eligible for SSDI benefits?

People who are eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits in Oregon must meet certain criteria established by the Social Security Administration (SSA). The individual must have a disability that has lasted or is expected to last for a minimum of 12 months or result in death. The disability must also prevent them from engaging in any substantial gainful activity. The individual must also have enough work credits to qualify. The amount of work credits varies depending on the person’s age. Generally, applicants must have at least 40 work credits, half of which must have been earned within the past 10 years. Individuals who receive SSDI benefits must meet continuing eligibility criteria to keep receiving payments. To remain eligible the individual must remain medically disabled, as evaluated by the SSA, and continue to meet any other benefit conditions. There are also requirements for SSDI applicants who have had a prior disability claim or appeal denied. In this case, the individual must have a much higher level of medical evidence showing a disabling condition than would be required for a new claim. In addition, applicants may receive SSDI benefits if they are blind. The SSA uses a different set of criteria to determine if someone is legally blind. Eligible applicants must have vision of 20/200 or less in their better eye. They must also have a very limited field of vision.
