When should an Advanced Medical Directive be used?

An Advanced Medical Directive (AMD) should be used when a person wants to make sure that their wishes are respected should they become unable to make decisions regarding their medical care in the future due to disability or illness. This document, also known as a living will, can be used to provide instruction to healthcare providers and family members on decisions concerning life-sustaining treatments, care preferences, and the type of environment they wish to be in should they become incapacitated. An AMD should be created while the person is still of sound mind and has the ability to make decisions regarding their health. It is important to understand that an AMD is not a replacement for a person’s healthcare power of attorney (POA). A POA is usually appointed by an individual during their lifetime to provide decisions when the individual is unable to do so. It is recommended that anyone in Oklahoma who is considering setting up an AMD feel free to ask their doctor for information about how to do so. It is also advisable to have a lawyer review the document to ensure that the language is clear and that it meets all legal and state requirements. Finally, the document should be made available to all relevant parties so that they can understand and honor the wishes of the individual.
