What disability benefits are available to me?

If you are a resident of Florida and have a disability, you may be eligible to receive disability benefits. The types of benefits vary depending on your situation, but common benefits include Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and Medicaid. SSDI is typically awarded to individuals who have a severe physical or mental impairment and are unable to work. A person must have worked for a certain amount of time and paid taxes in order to qualify for SSDI. The amount of benefits received depends on the amount of taxes paid over the years. SSI is a disability benefit for disabled people who have limited resources and income. The income limit is usually low and must be below the poverty level. SSI benefits may include cash payments and medical coverage. Medicaid is a joint federal/state program that provides health care coverage for people who are disabled. Applicants must meet certain financial eligibility criteria and, depending on the type of Medicaid, may also need to meet certain medical criteria. Medicaid coverage in Florida includes long-term services and supports, such as home health care, personal care, and respite services. There are other types of disability benefits available in Florida, including Vocational Rehabilitation and other services for disabled individuals. If you think you may be eligible for any of these benefits, contact your local Department of Children and Families or Social Security Administration office for more information.
