What is a disability waiver?
A disability waiver is a document that allows individuals with disabilities to receive services that are not typically covered in a standard health care plan. In the District of Columbia, there are two types of disability waivers available: the Core and Community Supports Waiver (CCSW) and the Supported Living Waiver (SLW). The CCSW provides individuals with long-term supports and services tailored to their needs, such as a personal attendant, a home health aide, and respite care. The SLW provides comprehensive and ongoing support services in a person’s own home to allow them to remain living independently. In order to receive a waiver, individuals must meet certain criteria and have a diagnosis of a physical or intellectual disability. They must also have a need for the services and supports provided in the waiver, as well as the ability to benefit from them. In addition, the individual’s assets, income, and resources must be below a certain level in order to qualify for a waiver. Once approved, the waiver allows individuals to receive services and supports that are not covered by their health insurance plan, which gives them the opportunity to stay independent and live safely in their own home.
