What is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law that protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination. The law was passed in 1990 and prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in employment, housing, transportation, public accommodations, and other services. The ADA also requires public places to provide reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities, including access for wheelchairs, special seating, and larger bathrooms. In Pennsylvania, the main agency enforcing the ADA is the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission (PHRC). The PHRC enforces the law by investigating complaints of discrimination based on disability and taking action to ensure employers, public entities, and others comply with the law. The PHRC also provides information and resources to help businesses comply with the ADA.
