What is a HIPP program?

A Health Insurance Premium Payment (HIPP) program is a type of disability planning law available in South Carolina that helps individuals with disabilities pay for health insurance premiums. This program is available to individuals who have a disability and meet certain financial eligibility guidelines. The HIPP program helps with the cost of health insurance premiums for individuals who are eligible for medical assistance through the State’s Medicaid programs. This program is designed to provide health care coverage to individuals who would otherwise be unable to pay for it on their own. HIPP also allows for coverage of premiums for private payers, such as employer-sponsored health insurance. The program covers the full cost of the insurance premium, as long as the premium does not exceed the maximum allowable amount set by the State. In order to be eligible for the HIPP program, individuals must meet specific financial criteria, as well as having a documented disability. The program also requires that individuals have a current health insurance plan in place to be eligible for the program, and that the plan meets certain criteria set by the state. Once enrolled in the HIPP program, individuals will receive a monthly payment to cover the cost of their health insurance premiums. This payment, which is sent directly to the insurance carrier, can help individuals with disabilities save money and afford the health insurance they need to access health care services.
