What is a health care surrogate?

A health care surrogate is an important part of Disability Planning Law in Nevada. It is a legal document that allows an individual to appoint someone else to make health care decisions for them if they are unable to do so for themselves. This appointed individual is known as a health care surrogate. A health care surrogate is appointed to make decisions about medical care and treatment for an individual if they are unable to make those decisions for themselves, such as when they are unconscious or incapacitated. They can also make decisions about withholding or withdrawing life-sustaining treatments, such as nutrition and hydration. This document is important because it allows a person to choose someone they trust to make their decisions for them in the event that they cannot make decisions on their own. The appointed health care surrogate is responsible for understanding the individual’s wishes and preferences when making decisions, as well as considering the individual’s best interests. It is important to name someone who can make decisions that are consistent with the individual’s wishes and who has a good relationship with the individual. In Nevada, all individuals eighteen years and older can appoint a health care surrogate. It is important to have a health care surrogate in place in case of emergency situations. If an individual does not have one in place, a court may appoint someone to make decisions for them.
