How long does it take to receive a disability determination decision?
Getting a disability determination decision can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. Depending on the complexity of your case, the disability determination decision could take more or less time. In West Virginia, disability determination decisions are typically made within eight weeks. The disability determination decision process begins when you complete an application for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and/or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. The application is sent to West Virginia’s Disability Determination Service (DDS). The DDS then reviews your application and other relevant documents and evidence. It can take up to four weeks for the DDS to review your application, and it may request additional information from you or your doctor. Once the DDS has all the required information, it will make a decision. The DDS will notify you in writing of its disability determination decision. If you’re approved, you’ll receive benefits starting from the date of your disability. If you’re denied, you’ll have the option to appeal the decision. This appeal process can take up to two months, and if it is still denied, you can appeal again and hold a hearing with an administrative law judge. This process can take up to several months. Overall, the time it takes to receive a disability determination decision can vary greatly, but in West Virginia, it typically takes about eight weeks.
