How often do I have to re-apply for disability benefits?

In Maryland, the frequency with which you must re-apply for disability benefits depends on the type of disability benefits you are seeking. For most disability benefits, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), you must typically reapply annually. However, if you receive SSI due to blindness or a disability, your benefits may be renewed automatically and you would therefore not need to reapply. When you reapply, the Social Security Administration will typically review the medical evidence in your case to determine whether you remain qualified for benefits. If you receive state-administered disability benefits, such as Maryland Disability Determination Services (DDS) benefits, you may need to reapply more often. While state regulations may vary, many states require reapplication for benefits every 6 months, or even more frequently. As with SSI and SSDI, the DDS will review your case each time you reapply to determine eligibility. If you receive long-term disability benefits through an employer-provided group disability insurance policies, you may be required to submit medical evidence on a regular basis as part of the terms of the policy. Typically, evidence must be submitted every 6 months in order to remain eligible for benefits. Reapplying for disability benefits can be time-consuming, so it is important to be aware of the frequency with which you must reapply in order to ensure that your disability benefits remain active.
