What is a functional capacity evaluation (FCE)?

A functional capacity evaluation (FCE) is a type of test used in disability planning law in South Carolina. It is used to assess the physical abilities and limitations of a person who is applying for disability benefits. During the course of the evaluation, the patient’s medical history, physical abilities, physical limitations, psychological functioning, and other variables are assessed in order to determine their ability to work. The evaluation is conducted by an expert doctor or physical therapist in order to make an accurate assessment. During the evaluation, the patient may be asked to perform certain tasks or exercises. This can include stretching, lifting weights, balancing, walking, or other activities. The evaluator will be looking to determine how much stress the patient can handle when performing physical activities, as well as the level of physical limitation that the patient has. The results of an FCE are then used to help determine if the patient is eligible for disability benefits. The results of the evaluation can be used to support the patient’s disability claim in South Carolina. They can also be used to determine the patient’s disability level, which impacts the amount of benefits they receive.
