What is a functional capacity evaluation (FCE)?

A functional capacity evaluation (FCE) is a type of test used to measure a person’s physical abilities and limitations due to injury, disease, or disability, commonly used in Virginia disability planning law. It helps to identify the functional requirements for a job and the ability of a disabled person to perform work-related tasks. An FCE typically involves a series of tests designed to evaluates a person’s strength, range of motion, coordination, endurance, and other physical capacities needed to complete certain tasks. During an FCE, a physician or an occupational or physical therapist may administer tests to measure the strength and durability of a person’s muscles and joints. Typically, this involves the therapist observing and evaluating the person while they attempt to complete activities such as lifting weights, bending down, reaching overhead, or walking on an inclined surface. At the end of an FCE, the therapist can make recommendations about the disabled person’s ability to perform certain work functions, as well as suggest accommodations or modifications that the person may need to complete the work. This information can be used by the Virginia disability planning law to gauge and assess the type of job and the amount of work-related activities that a disabled person is able to do.
