What is a functional capacity evaluation (FCE)?

A functional capacity evaluation (FCE) is a type of test used to measure a person’s physical abilities and limitations due to injury, disease, or disability, commonly used in Virginia disability planning law. It helps to identify the functional requirements for a job and the ability of a disabled person to perform work-related tasks. An FCE typically involves a series of tests designed to evaluates a person’s strength, range of motion, coordination, endurance, and other physical capacities needed to complete certain tasks.
