What is the Social Security Blue Book?

The Social Security Blue Book is a document created by the Social Security Administration (SSA) which lists medical criteria for individuals to qualify for disability benefits. It includes criteria for each of the major disability categories: mental disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, cardiovascular disorders, endocrine disorders, hematological disorders, respiratory disorders, digestive disorders, neurological disorders, immune system disorders, and cancer. For each disability category, there are specific criteria spelled out in the Blue Book that must be met in order to receive Social Security Disability benefits. In Nevada, disability planning law requires that individuals provide medical evidence that they meet these criteria in order to be eligible for disability benefits. It is important to note that just because someone has a certain condition doesn’t always mean they will qualify for disability payments—the criteria specified in the Blue Book must be met. The Blue Book also defines the severity of a condition necessary for an individual to qualify for Social Security benefits in each disability category. This helps to ensure that individuals are only eligible for disability benefits if their condition is severe enough to make them unable to work.
